Programme Description

The Certificate in Wound & Ostomy Practice course is designed as a comprehensive, modular programme delivered over 60 hours. It integrates theoretical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and practical application to support the development of competent and confident practitioners.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competency in comprehensive wound assessment, documentation, and implementation of appropriate wound management strategies
  2. Apply evidence-based interventions in the prevention and management of pressure injuries, MARSI, MASD, and leg ulcers
  3. Manage complex wounds, including surgical, burn, malignant, palliative, and paediatric wounds, using clinical reasoning and best practices
  4. Perform safe and effective ostomy care, including assessment, appliance management, and identification of complications
  5. Provide patient- and caregiver-centred education to promote self-management and optimise quality of life

Modules

Module 1

Fundamentals of Wound Care  (18 hours):

This module introduces the fundamental principles of wound care and provides learners with a strong foundation in skin integrity, wound healing and evidence-based wound management. Learners will develop an understanding of the structure and function of the skin, factors affecting wound healing and the physiological processes involved in tissue repair.

The module covers the classification of wounds, including acute and chronic wounds, and introduces a systematic approach to wound assessment and documentation. Learners will explore the principles of wound bed preparation, infection prevention and management, and the role of inflammation in wound healing. Emphasis is placed on recognising wound characteristics, identifying barriers to healing and selecting appropriate management strategies.

Module 2

Pressure Injury and Skin Integrity (12 hours):

This module focuses on maintaining skin integrity and implementing evidence-based strategies for the prevention, assessment and management of pressure-related and moisture-associated skin damage. Learners will develop the knowledge and skills required to identify individuals at risk of skin breakdown and implement appropriate preventive interventions across healthcare settings.

The module covers the aetiology, staging, prevention and management of pressure injuries, with emphasis on risk assessment, pressure redistribution and skin inspection. Learners will also explore the identification and management of Medical Adhesive-Related Skin Injury (MARSI), Moisture-Associated Skin Damage (MASD), Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD) and other common causes of skin breakdown.

Module 3

Advanced Wound Management (15 Hours):

This module focuses on the assessment and management of complex and specialised wound types commonly encountered across acute, community and long-term care settings. Learners will develop advanced clinical reasoning skills to identify wound aetiology, contributing factors and evidence-based treatment strategies.

Topics include the assessment and management of surgical wounds, wound dehiscence, burns, malignant wounds, palliative wounds and paediatric wounds. Learners will explore wound-related complications such as infection, exudate management, pain control, bleeding and odour management. The module will also introduce advanced wound care products and dressing selection principles based on wound characteristics and patient needs.

Module 4

Principles and Practice of Ostomy Care (15 Hours):

This module equips learners with the knowledge and skills required to provide safe, effective and person-centred ostomy care across the continuum of care. Learners will gain an understanding of gastrointestinal and urinary anatomy and physiology, indications for stoma formation and the different types of faecal and urinary diversions.

The module covers pre-operative stoma education, stoma site marking principles, post-operative assessment and routine stoma management. Learners will be introduced to various pouching systems, accessories and product selection based on stoma characteristics, body profile and lifestyle considerations.

Target Audience

  • Nurses involved in direct patient care requiring wound or ostomy management
  • Nurses with a special interest in wound care, skin integrity, and ostomy management

Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to equip nurses with the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes to deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based wound and ostomy care across healthcare settings. At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate comprehensive wound assessment, accurate documentation, and appropriate wound management.
  2. Apply evidence-based interventions for the prevention and management of pressure injuries, MARSI, MASD, and leg ulcers.
  3. Manage complex wounds, including surgical, burn, malignant, palliative, and paediatric wounds, using clinical reasoning and best practices.
  4. Perform safe and effective ostomy care, including assessment, appliance management, and identification of complications.
  5. Educate patients and caregivers to support self-management and optimise quality of life.

Entry Requirements

• Registered Nurses (RNs) and Enrolled Nurses (ENs) with a valid practising licence.

Types of Assessment

Quiz, Presentation and practical performance

At the conclusion of the programme, participants are required to present a case study, incorporating clinical reasoning and wound or ostomy assessment (including appropriate marking), to demonstrate their integration of knowledge and application to practice.

Graduation Requirements

  • Participants must complete and pass all 4 modules to be awarded the Certificate in Wound and Ostomy Practice.
  • Participants must achieve an attendance of 75%, in any month of the course.
