Programme Description

In collaboration with Inspire Healthcare, the Certificate in Healthcare Studies (Nursing Aides) is designed to meet the healthcare requirements of Singapore by providing learners with the necessary caregiving skills, thereby effectively addressing the demand for trained nursing aides. This course helps to pave the direction for more Nursing Aides to be coached and made competent to possess knowledge and skills on common medical conditions and care interventions, strong communication skills and customer service. The course modules are developed to address the specific workforce deficits and industry demands.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Provide care interventions such as measurement of vital signs, showering, grooming, feeding, toileting, repositioning, transferring techniques using mobility aids, respiratory needs such as tracheostomy care, and ventilatory support.
  2. Apply the knowledge of aging process, disease processes of common chronic disease to care of the older person(s).
  3. Demonstrate competence to perform basic skin hygiene, wound assessment and simple wound dressing to patient at risks for pressure injuries.
  4. Apply the understanding of End-of Life Care principles in providing physical comfort and symptom management of patient with terminal conditions.

 

Demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication when providing nursing care to the patients with evolving needs.

Modules

Module 1

Communication and Service Standards (16 hours):

The unit go through communication and service standards help them to carry themselves with professionally, poise and confidence in addition to creating positive and respectful impressions in their day-to-days communication styles; in the delivery of care to both patients and next-of-kin.

Module 2

Skin and Wound Care (16 hours):

This unit focuses on the causes and preventive measures of pressure injuries, wound management (wound assessment, aseptic technique). Common products and practical inclusive). Infection control practice segment would cover common micro-organisms, infection preventive measures and hand hygiene.

Module 3

Basic Monitoring and Care Interventions (80 hours):
This unit focuses on the learners ablity to perform bedside/basic monitoring using medical devices to measure temperature, blood pressure, respiration, pulse, capillary blood glucose. Learners would also be taught and coached on how to manage patients who require oral care, feeding, showering, dressing, skin and foot care, safe manual handling, repositioning, supervised feeding, nasogastric tube feeding, nebulizer and topical ointment/cream applications.

Module 4

Conditions and Needs in the Older Person Population (24 hours):
This unit focuses on the common medical conditions / geriatric syndromes in the older person population. Learners would be able to utilize person-cantered approaches in supporting and caring for the older persons in inpatient settings such as aged care centres and hospitals as well as community settings and home-based services.

Module 5

Chronic Diseases and End of Life Care (24 hours):
This unit focuses on the learner ability to understand the common chronic diseases affecting the adult population in Singapore. They will learn about the disease process, clinical manifestations, medical, nursing, and pharmacological measures. In addition, they will recognize how polypharmacy will lead to adverse complications. Also, apply palliative concepts to care of the terminally ill and end of life including participation in symptom management.

Target Audience

  • Individuals who wish to gain the skillset in working as a healthcare assistant or nursing aide.
  • They can immediately start work as a healthcare assistant or nursing aide in a variety of healthcare settings

Entry Requirements

  • Language: IELTS 5.0 or equivalent
  • Diploma in Nursing (Overseas). For prospective students with overseas diploma qualifications, the diploma programme should preferably have been conducted in English.
  • Minimum two (2) years post registration clinical nursing experience and be currently employed in an approved healthcare institution (preferred)
  • Age: 21 years old and above
